We believe firmly that all jobs should be quality jobs, and that artists and cultural workers deserve to be treated with fairness and respect. When workers come together to unionize, we are building our strength as a workforce. We are creating together the conditions that can lead to enhanced benefits, better working conditions, clearer protocols, and mutual respect at work. Joining a union is one step to creating positive change that is lasting and sustainable. Through forming a union, workers achieve the legally-recognized right to bargain together for a collective agreement.

The Arts and Cultural Workers’ Union, IATSE Local B-778, has a wide breadth of knowledge regarding the realities facing workers in the creative industries. As arts and cultural workers, we understand the workplace culture of arts organizations, gallery spaces, studios, and artist cooperatives. Our union has clear insight into the dynamics unique to our sector that shape the relationship between workers, board members, community members, and employers.

We were founded by artists, and we use creative and dynamic strategies for organizing ourselves and our workplaces. We are dedicated to building the collective power of arts and cultural workers, and working collaboratively with our allies across the labour movement. Our members collectively have decades of experience in labour and community organizing, and bring this experience to ACWU.

By being part of the labour movement, we have access to valuable resources and support that can help us achieve workplace justice. Our efforts are bolstered by the support of our fellow members in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). IATSE, which represents technicians and creatives in film, theatre, and entertainment industries, was founded in 1893 and has over a century of experience defending workers’ rights. The ACWU is also affiliated with the Vancouver District Labour Council, a regional council supported by the Canadian Labour Council (CLC) that brings together unions in Vancouver for the purposes of solidarity and collaboration.

FREELANCE ARTS AND CULTURAL WORKERS

In addition to representing workers in common workplace, ACWU represents freelance arts and cultural workers, including independent visual and media artists, illustrators, photographers, videographers, and other creative practitioners. ACWU has a long-term goal to develop an extended benefits plan and education and training opportunities for freelance workers. Some of our freelance members have also been provided meaningful employment through workers’ cooperatives unionized with ACWU.

ACWU welcomes applications for membership from freelance workers. To apply for membership, complete the online application form

I like being a member of the ACWU because I have been introduced to a whole new community of art workers that I had been missing since art school. Arts and cultural workers need a collective voice to disrupt the highly individualistic culture that can be part of the art world.
